CORVALLIS - Research at Oregon State University has shown that tobacco smoke depletes the body's supply of vitamin E, depriving smokers of a key protection against cell damage and possibly explaining why they are at greater risk of cancer.
The study also indicates that vitamin C and vitamin E work together to help ward off cell damage and for the first time shows that people with too little vitamin C can lose vitamin E even faster.
The work by professor Maret Traber in OSU's Linus Pauling Institute and research associate Richard Bruno looks at the cellular damage caused by what are known as free radicals.
