Tight Schedule, Winter Weather Test Fairbanks Rail Terminal Project

In July 1923 when President Warren G. Harding drove the golden spike completing the Alaska Railroad in ceremonies at Nenana, the combined population of Seward, Anchorage and Fairbanks -- the three communities of any size along the railroad corridor -- was barely 5,000. Today, with the railroad carrying many thousands of passengers during the busy summer visitor season, the state-owned corporation is on a building schedule to improve system-wide passenger facilities, including a new inter-modal facility and depot in Fairbanks.
