The 2005 Match Day results underscore a growing trend among U.S. medical school seniors--using internal medicine residencies as a stepping-stone to careers in other medical specialties.
Data from the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP) show that 1,526 U.S. seniors were matched with preliminary internal medicine (PGY-1-only) programs last month--55 more than the 1,471 who did so last year. Residents in such programs take just 1 year of internal medicine, to fulfill clinical requirements so they can move on to subspecialist training in fields such as anesthesiology or dermatology.
