How serious is the threat to retail pharmacy represented by mail service? That's the question of the day for the chain drug industry. The answer, of course, is that it is serious indeed.
A January article on the front page of The New York Times carried this headline: "Drugstores Fret as Insurers Demand Pills by Mail." The story began this way: "Employer health plans across the country are forcing millions of consumers to change their drug-buying habits. And one side effect could be the decline of the neighborhood drugstore."
