There are huge undiscovered petroleum resources in Alaska, without a doubt. Billions of barrels of oil and trillions of cubic feet of natural gas await the drill bit. With oil and gas prices at record levels, why aren't there multitudes of exploration rigs busy at work?
It's a puzzling question, and one of great concern to Gov. Frank Murkowski and other state officials who are worried about the continued depletion of the big producing North Slope fields and insufficient exploration to replace those barrels being produced.
