After years of focusing on saving trees, endangered species, waterways and other ecosystem-oriented causes, Earth Day event organizers are taking a different tack: ``Save the whales'' has become ``Save the neighborhood.''

Environmental organizations throughout Los Angeles will officially celebrate the 35th annual Earth Day on Friday with this year's theme being ``Protect our children and our future'' - an effort to focus on issues pertaining to young people in urban areas.
