CEO Lee Scott said Wal-Mart Stores Inc. raises the standard of living for American families by about $1,250 per year. That amounts to about $100 billion a year that can be reinvested in the community, Scott said, citing research from a professor at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia.
Scott painted Wal-Mart as the good guy while speaking to about 50 print journalists gathered last week in Rogers for the company's first-ever media conference. The two-day event is part of the Bentonville company's new campaign to improve its image.
Scott was serious, defensive, self-deprecating and at times funny as he answered questions from the journalists.
