Sleep is essential to good health. A good night's sleep plays a key role in disease resistance, injury prevention, clarity of thought, and stability of mood. (1) Unfortunately, more than 70 million Americans, including children, do not get enough sleep. (2) Elementary school-aged children require an average of 10 to 11 hours of sleep per night, but according to the 2004 Sleep in America Poll which examined the sleep habits of children, 69% of children experience one or more sleep problems at least several nights a week. (3)
