Writing about Kleist presents several problems which are visible in this largely excellent addition to the 'Companion' series. There is, first, the huge amount of commentary generated by his relatively slight (and highly teachable) oeuvre, and the consequent difficulty of saying anything new. Acknowledging this problem, Jeffrey Sammons and Jost Hermand make a virtue of necessity by offering critical surveys of the secondary literature on Amphitryon and Penthesilea respectively.
