In 1556, in a garden in northern India, a young boy of 13 was crowned Padshah, or emperor, of Hindustan. His name was Jalaluddin Muhammad Akbar, which translates as "glory of religion, Muhammad is great." Later, he became known simply as Akbar ("great"). Still later, as the ruler of a vast and wealthy realm known as the Mughal Empire, he became known as Akbar the Great.

When young Akbar was crowned, his kingdom was not only experiencing an economic recession, but it was also under attack by enemy armies. Years of warfare, plus a long drought, had caused a famine.
