Total frozen food sales in supermarkets were up as 2005 dawned, rising 2.2% for the 12 weeks ended January 23rd, according to Information Resources Inc. (Chicago). Units were up 1.1% as well. Growth in the large dinner/entree and ice cream segments was largely responsible for the strength of the period. Frozen turkey, other breakfast foods--fueled by hand-held sandwich items--and sausage all enjoyed strong gains.
