SIR John Mills, the actor who portrayed the British as they would most like to see themselves, died yesterday, fittingly on St George's Day. He was 97.

Sir John was head of a showbusiness dynasty. His daughters - Juliet and Hayley - are actresses. His wife, Mary Hayley Bell, also acted but became a playwright. His son, Jonathan, is a screenwriter.
