WASHINGTON--Business and legal reform groups are expressing disappointment that the U.S. Supreme Court again refused to outline standards for punitive damage awards when it upheld a $10 million award against TXO Production Corp.
"The most disturbing thing is that the court can't get its act together," according to Martin F. Connor, president of the Washington-based American Tort Reform Association.
"All we can read is that the court reaffirmed Haslip," he said in an interview, referring to an earlier case on punitive damages. "There is some outer limit on punitive damages, but the court won't say what it is."
