Elder statesman Davis to face the young pretender Murphy STEVE DAVIS and Shaun Murphy were rank outsiders before the start of the Embassy world snooker championship - yet the pair meet later today with a place in the semi-finals at stake.
Davis, 47, claimed the last of his six world titles in 1989, when Murphy (above) was starting primary school.
This is the first time 22-year-old Murphy has got beyond the opening round at Sheffield but, after beating former champion John Higgins 13-8, the world No48 said: "I would have been satisfied with simply not falling over on my way into the arena."
All four quarterfinals start today.
