To California vintners, what's the difference between an oaky chardonnay from the Napa Valley and one that's produced in the San Francisco's South Bay Area?
Big bucks.
Tired of being overshadowed by the better-known Napa and Sonoma valleys to the north, 70 other Bay Area wineries have banded together to capture a larger share of the wine market. Their strategy is to create a ``San Francisco Bay'' appellation, or title, for their wine.
That way, when Wente Brothers ships its sauvignon blanc to New York or Europe, the label would read San Francisco Bay instead of Livermore. It may be a mere geographical distinction to residents of Northern California, but it could ...
