The Mississippi San Rafael Silver Mining Company and its successors were modest-sized, U.S.-based corporations that operated the Cedral mine in the northern Mexican state of Coahuila from 1870 through the early 1890s. During that time the mine yielded around 50,000 tons of silver-lead ore, but failed to yield a profit for its owners, a shifting group of shady promoters and respectable businessmen. Despite their relative obscurity, these small mining companies merit attention since detailed examinations of U.S.-owned businesses in Mexico are rare.
