At a time when the cultural life of the late eighteenth century is coming under greater scrutiny, the history of the press assumes an increasingly important place. In the last few years scholars have learned more about newspapers and pamphlet literature, the extent of political censorship, and the economics of the book trade, all in the context of a wider cultural history of the French Revolution and of the immediate pre-revolutionary period.
