LIVERPOOL last night approved a proposal to become the first city in the country to levy a tax on chewing gum to fund the cost of cleaning it from the streets.
The motion for a penny-a-packet increase on gum was unanimously backed at a meeting of Liverpool City Council.
While the vote will have no immediate impact on chewing gum prices in the city, councillors hope their approval of the motion will help persuade the Government to impose a nationwide tax.
The money raised would go towards Liverpool's pounds 100,000-a-year clean-up bill for discarded chewing gum, Council leader Mike Storey, who made the proposal, said: 'I'm delighted the council ...
