For more than 45,000 years, the Wadi Arabah--a northerly extension of the Great Rift Valley that links the Dead Sea with the Gulf of Aqaba--has served as a communications route between southern Jordan and Israel's Negev Desert. As such, it witnessed the development of human settlement over many millennia and now hosts numerous archaeological treasures. However, a complete record of the many explorations and excavations conducted in modern times has been lacking for a variety of reasons.
