AN elderly woman was left to die from appalling neglect in a flagship hospital, her son claimed yesterday.

Anne Irons was admitted to Edinburgh Royal Infirmary after breaking her pelvis in a fall at home, but doctors said she should make a good recovery.

Instead her son Norman, a former Lord Provost of Edinburgh, watched his mother develop bedsores and mouth and throat infections so severe she found it hard to eat.

The 89-year-old died of bronchopneumonia two days after she was transferred to another hospital. Mr Irons said: 'Her basic nursing and nutrition were neglected, her selfesteem and her general welfare ...
