Apr. 29--A national labor union is reporting that Texas led the nation in workplace deaths among Hispanics in 2003, the most recent year statistics were available.

Of the 491 Texas workers who died that year, 163 were Hispanic, according to a study released by the AFL-CIO on Thursday.

Of the 5,559 people nationwide who died in 2003 as a result of work-related injuries, 791 were Hispanic, a 48 percent increase from 1992. California, with two fewer Hispanic worker deaths than Texas, and Florida had the second- and third-highest numbers of deaths among Hispanics.
