Lytton Strachey is probably best known today as the gentle old gay with a beard, played so sympathetically by Jonathan Pryce in the film Carrington.
The film, which portrays Strachey's love affair with the painter Dora Carrington is not a bad way for him to be remembered: their relationship surely brought out his best qualities and, as Paul Levy points out in this collection of his letters, must rank as 'one of the most poignant love stories of the 20th Century'.
