The New South Wales Government has sought expert legal opinion on its tax rights. The Australian Treasurer, Peter Costello, has demanded that the states abolish some business taxes, otherwise their goods and services tax (GST) funds will be withheld. He warned that they would be breaching the GST agreement. New South Wales has refused to cut stamp duties. It has asked a top Sydney barrister, Bret Walker, to give an opinion on whether New South Wales has complied with the agreement. Western Australia has also refused to cut stamp duties.
