A FRIEND of mine once told me that God is a merciful God and it is not true that He is a jealous God. I told my friend that this is not what the Holy Bible says. Particularly in the Book of Exodus in the Old Testament, the story of the ancient Israelites who were being freed from slavery and who were leaving Egypt. In Exodus 34:14, our Lord said to the Israelites, referred to as Gods people in the Holy Bible: "Do not worship any other god, for the Lord, whose name is Jealous, is a jealous God." The God of Israel indeed was a jealous God who tolerated no rivals. The God of Israel is also our God of contemporary times.
