THE FIRST PART OF THIS loosely structured book covers the years 1945-1989 and provides a running commentary on a series of policy undertakings in East Germany, the aim of which was to engineer men's souls, to use Maxim Gorky's phrase. The second part covers the liberation from Soviet occupation and brings the narrative to the mid-1990s.
