Even under the rugged code of hockey players, the tough-guy persona only applies to a certain point.
For Dan Collins, that point came at the end of a very long needle.
Collins, a right winger, was playing for the United States at the World Under-18 Championships in the Czech Republic earlier this month. Collins suffered a separated right shoulder in the United States' first game.
His choices were to play in pain or go home. Collins didn't travel across the globe for a quick turnaround, so there was no option at all. The decision to keep playing, however, required repeated shots of painkiller.
