After months of inactivity, the government of Argentina surprised a dozen utility companies Tuesday by setting a new date for public hearings to deal with natural gas contractual issues that have been delayed since the country's economic collapse in December 2001.

At the same time, neighboring Chile's gas distributor Metrogas said it was forced to cut natural gas supplies to industrial consumers due to shortages in imports from Argentina.
