Vonage signed a contract of undisclosed size with Verizon that will allow the voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) carrier provide E911 emergency service to its customers in all areas served by Verizon - delivering both a caller's address and phone number to operators at public safety answering points (PSAPs).
The deal underscores the growing storm over E911 services, or mainly the lack thereof, delivered by VoIP calls. Vonage already is being sued in Texas, and it's facing a potential lawsuit in Connecticut over its inability to deliver full E911. The situation has escalated to the point where Congress finally has started to demand some sort of resolution. ...
