The federal government stopped selling 30-year Treasury bonds in 2001, saying such long-term debt wasn't needed in an era of budget surpluses and falling national debt. On Wednesday, the government said it is looking at bringing back the venerable long-term bond. The bond market was rocked by the news, considering that Treasury officials had indicated as recently as last month that they weren't interested in reviving the long bond.

"It's a complete shock," said Sadakichi Robbins, head of global fixed-income at Julius Baer in New York.
