Insomnia--chronic inability to sleep--has been attributed to the caffeine in coffee more than to any other specific dietary agent. Not to tea, not to cola drinks, not to cocoa or chocolate, which contribute equal or greater amounts of caffeine depending on quantities consumed. Almost as if by definition, coffee and sleeplessness are considered synonymous when consumed prior to bedtime. So much so, that decaffeinated coffee has grown into a major league product during the past several decades. How much validity is there in this belief that coffee causes insomnia?
