When the rain broke the heat spell, Ed Kipe knew it was time. And so, he went out and performed The Act.
It was a ritual that signaled he was at one with the American Dream, an upstanding citizen, a man his Plymouth Meeting, Pa., neighbors could depend on.
Ed Kipe mowed his lawn.
But gone was his faithful, pale green, gas-guzzling, rumbling Lawn Boy. In its place was an electric mower that runs on a battery and hums like a vacuum cleaner.
As long as God provides sunshine and the garden center sells fertilizer, The Act will not die. The power mower, however, may be another story.
