I can't repeat the conversation word for word, but the mother was basically calling her adolescent-looking daughter stupid, slow and lazy.
We were in the middle of the mall. Embarrassed, the girl began to cry.
``Stop that crying,'' hissed the mother. ``And get out of these people's way.'' She gave the girl a small push.
There we were _ scornful woman, sobbing child, stunned me.
You've probably witnessed a scene like this, too. Your thoughts at the moment may have ranged from criminal (decking the mother) to compassionate (comforting the child) to caustic (saying, ``Some people need to stick to raising goldfish'') to casual (walking away).
