BORN on June 21, 1913, Huk Supremo Luis Taruc was the leader of the Hukbong Bayan Laban sa Hapon (Hukbalahap) movement from 1942 to 1954. His involvement with the movement came after his initiation on the problems of agrarian Filipinos when he was a student in the early 1930s.

Under his leadership, the Hukbalahap became a potent force combating the foreign aggressors during the Second World War. After the war, it refocused its attention on securing liberation for its members from the feudal structures that prevailed in rural areas. Taruc was elected to the House of Representatives but he was not allowed to take his seat in Congress, driving him back to the hills. ...
