EMI's Gemini and RCA's Classic Library CDs
For much of the 20th Century, British conducting revolved around the three Bs: Beecham, Barbirolli and Boult. Beecham and Barbirolli enjoyed international reputations; Boult was more of a purely British phenomenon. All of them recorded extensively and many of their readings remain top recommendations, as some outstanding twofers on EMI's new superbargain Gemini series testify.
Sir Thomas Beecham was far and away the most colourful of the three and is represented here by some excellent Beethoven and some exhilarating, occasionally exasperating, Handel.
