SIR RIDLEY SCOTT has defended his controversial film Kingdom of Heaven, which opens to general release this weekend.
The epic, starring Orlando Bloom, is set in the 12th century during the Crusades and depicts the bloody war between Christians and Muslims.
Critics have accused the director of insensitivity for making the project after the events of September 11.
