On Thursday, the much-trumpeted Family and Medical Leave Act of 1993 goes into effect. Eager to be perceived as ``family-friendly,'' Congress in February approved the measure that will allow a worker up to 12 weeks of unpaid leave to take care of family emergencies.
You'll forgive me if I call this much ado about very little. Yes, I know it's time that business and government realized that employees do have lives outside the usual 9-to-5. And yes, it is good for businesses to be sympathetic to workers who have to juggle all the demands of daily life _ work and home.
But for all those politicians who pat themselves on the back for voting for the bill, I ask, please hold ...
