At the time of writing, the Daily Telegraph is becoming dewy-eyed about the Union flag being hoisted for the last time over the British High Commission in Tonga. The article is written in nostalgic tones, already grieving for the demise of the Pacific mission guarded by four carronades "salvaged from a British privateer which was attacked by Tongans in 1806 during one of the frequent clashes with European explorers". It would seem that the copious funds normally allocated to the running of this "white wooden bungalow" are urgently needed to assist with somewhat less romantic diplomatic initiatives, such as counter-terrorism and arresting the proliferation of nuclear ...
