This is August, and strange things seem to happen in the markets and the world during August. 
There seems to be a pattern. Just when investors and others are laid back, preparing for vacation at the seashore or mountains or maybe a trek to Europe, something unexpected happens. 
You can track the strange happenings of August for decades back, but this decade seems particularly accident-prone in a year's eighth month. 
In August 1990 Iraq invaded Kuwait, and the uncertainty about oil prices knocked a toddling economy into a recession. The stock market didn't recover until early the next year, when Iraq was defeated.
