SPRINGDALE, Pa. _ The former white farmhouse in southwest Pennsylvania is a shrine to an environmental icon.
The modest five-room house on a wooded hillside overlooking the Allegheny River 14 miles east of Pittsburgh calls itself the birthplace of a healthier planet.
It is the birthplace and childhood home of author Rachel Carson.
Carson, the author of "Silent Spring," her 1962 book looking at the impact of indiscriminate pesticide use on nature, was born and raised in the structure that is now known as the Rachel Carson Homestead.
