Readers have already been inundated with commentary about Pope John Paul II these past few weeks--on radio and television and in newspapers and magazines.
"What more," the objective observer has every right to ask, "can be said or written about the late pope?"
"Not much" is the only honest answer one can give.
The comments have run the gamut from the euphoric (John Paul "the Great," even "St." John Paul II) to the disparaging (best-selling author Thomas Cahill's op-ed piece of April 5 in The New York Times, in which he asserts that this pope may well have destroyed the church).
