Cambridge Crown court has been upgraded in order to host trials for the most serious offences, including murder and rape.
The Lord Chief Justice, Lord Woolf, announced the upgrade when he sat judicially as part of a Court of Appeal hearing at the court today.
The move means that victims and witnesses of serious crime in Cambridgeshire will no longer have to travel the 76 miles to Norwich or west to Northampton to attend court, but will be able to do so locally, saving time and money.
