I note that San Francisco State University is now moving toward the establishment of a department of gay studies. A minor in the field begins this fall.
At the same time, a major in gay studies is in the works at the University of California, Berkeley.
Gay studies hereby joins other academic area programs such as African-American studies, women's studies, Judaic studies, Asian studies and so on. All reflect a new awareness of cultural, religious, gender or ethnic groups, their history and their pursuits.
I have no problem with the academic legitimacy of any of them.
