An inquiry is being held into tort law reforms introduced since 1999 in New South Wales (NSW). Groups such as the NSW Bar Association, Community Care Underwriting and the Construction, Forestry, Mining & Energy Union have contributed to the Legislative Council's inquiry. It was claimed at a public hearing that amendments to personal injury compensation laws have not lowered premiums, and have had a negative impact on community groups and individuals. John McIntyre, the president of the NSW Law Society, claims the tort law reforms were driven by panic over rising insurance premiums.
