Jul. 5--Three at a time, cars roll through the bays at the Houston Auto Auction. One may be a white Chevette, complete with telltale blue and yellow striping and Southwestern Bell Telephone sign. Another, a late model Ford Taurus.
And then there's the regulation blue-and-white Houston police cruiser. Prospective buyers swarm around the vehicles, popping the hoods, checking for leaks and - this being Houston - testing the air conditioning. The auctioneers start the bidding and - within seconds - all three cars are sold.
Three more vehicles pull up. Four hot, dizzying hours later, more than 400 cars and trucks have been auctioned off.
