Jul. 16--STEEL LOSS: National Steel Corp., which owns the Great Lakes Steel plant in Ecorse, Mich., reported a $17.4 million second-quarter loss on sales of $622.7 million. The Mishawaka, Ind.-based company earned $4.5 million of sales of $621.3 million in the same quarter last year. The company said it was optimistic because the results were an improvement over this year's first quarter, when it lost $53.7 million.
