MILWAUKEE (AP) -- In the wake of complaints from numerous developers that Butler's garter snakes were stalling their projects, Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources officials have implemented a new policy to protect the reptile.
The snake's habitat is shrinking and the DNR declared it a threatened species in 1997, meaning that they cannot be killed in most cases.
While the common garter snake can be found across the state, Butler's garter snake is confined to parts of Milwaukee, Waukesha, Ozaukee and Washington counties.
