POT OF GOLD
Black and gold is one of the most worldly (and foolproof) combinations on earth. High contrast is why; the brightness really stands out. Actually, gold is a chameleon whose character depends on the color it's mixed with: Pink or pale blue makes it feminine; with red, it's sexy; with neutrals like beige or white, pure and classic. Clockwise from left: Rosenthal porcelain and 22kt-gold teapot, $450. Marc Blackwell porcelain and 22kt-gold candlestick, $150 for a pair. Bernardaud porcelain espresso cup, $46, and saucer, $24. Ricci Argentieri gold-plated spoon, $125 for five-piece setting. Smythson leather journals with gilt-edged paper, $180 each.
