It was 1987, and the crowd was abuzz. The then-7-year-old Fashion Footwear Association of New York was hosting its inaugural Fashion Medal of Honor awards ceremony. The black-tie affair, cosponsored by The New Yorker, brought together footwear's power players, who enlivened the ballroom at the Omni Park Central Hotel. French shoemaker Robert Clergerie walked away with the unofficial award for best dancer.

The highlight of the evening was a tribute to David Evins of Marx & Newman, the famed designer behind Judy Garland's ruby-red "Dorothy" slippers.
