The Association of Home Appliance Manufacturers (AHAM) certifies room-size portable air cleaners for the rate at which they remove airborne smoke, dust, and pollen. Based on an industry-wide standard - which specifies, for instance, the size and particles to be removed - the certification allows for an accurate appraisal of a cleaner's effectiveness in a particular-sized room and for comparisons with other models.
What follows are directions for using the certified data, and a listing of models that have been evaluated.
