FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla.--Aug. 3--On a recent sweltering day, Rene Isquardo walked several blocks from her friend's house in Fort Lauderdale to a small storefront business on Southwest 27th Avenue called Teleco Plus.
She gave the man $15, walked into one of several small booths that resemble dressing rooms and did what she loves to do most.
Phone home. "It is a sacrifice," said Isquardo. "I give up buying decent things - even good food. But it is worth it."
The call was to Brasilia, Brazil, where Isquardo, 19, grew up. She has family there, and likes to hear their voices as often as possible.
